Anthropic expands science credits through research institutions
Anthropic announced an AI for Science expansion on October 28, naming 20 foundations, institutions and research groups receiving support. The change gives researchers an institutional route to Claude credits alongside a program that began with individual scientists.

Institutions distribute the credits
Anthropic names organizations including the Simons Foundation, Wellcome Sanger Institute, Space Telescope Science Institute and EMBL. Funders will distribute credits to researchers, while institutional partners will use credits within their organizations. The company expects some supported projects to produce shared datasets, software and standards. For a research software team, the immediate decision is which access route fits its institution and project. A credit award should be planned alongside the staff time needed to review outputs and maintain any resulting tools.
Hardware access is a separate project
The announcement also references the Model Hardware Standard developed with HHMI Janelia. That effort entered research preview on August 27 and addresses connections between agents and programmable equipment. It is separate from distributing model credits. Teams considering both should keep the access budget and the equipment-integration review separate.
