Chips and optical manufacturing
Marvell contributes switching silicon, custom compute designs and electrical interconnect technology. Lumentum brings lasers, optical transceivers, optical circuit switches and indium phosphide manufacturing. The companies intend to coordinate design across the electrical and optical signal chain, from connections between data centers to links within advanced chip packages.
Where the optical engine sits
Lumentum’s August 25 technical account describes several architectures operating alongside each other. Pluggable optics sit at the front panel. Near-packaged optics move the optical engine closer to switch silicon while retaining modular replacement. Co-packaged optics integrate that engine more tightly with the switch package, addressing electrical reach, port density and power constraints. These choices concern physical layout and maintenance as well as bandwidth. In silicon-photonics engines, a continuous-wave laser supplies steady light and a separate modulator encodes the data. An external, faceplate-mounted laser source can move laser heat away from the switch chip and allow replacement of the light source. That does not make the tightly integrated optical engine equally replaceable. Scale-out networks connect accelerators across racks and rows through a switched fabric. During training or inference, collective communication makes many accelerators exchange data together, so congestion and link reliability affect the shared workload. Manufacturing must sustain consistent yield and performance across volume, through repeated production runs.
Existing demand, not acquisition revenue
In separate results published on November 2, Lumentum reported $1.2626 billion in revenue for the quarter ended September 26. Revenue increased 25.5 percent from the preceding quarter. Chief executive Michael Hurlston said its second major near-packaged and co-packaged optics win carried purchase commitments above $5 billion. Those commitments describe future customer purchases, not revenue recognized in that quarter. Components contributed $754.2 million to the reported total, while systems contributed $508.4 million. The company identified pump lasers and optical circuit switching as leading contributors to growth. These disclosures describe Lumentum’s existing business before the proposed ownership change, spanning both individual optical components and systems.
Customers still deal with separate companies
Lumentum’s November 2 customer communication says both companies will operate independently until closing. It says existing commercial agreements, orders and support arrangements remain in place, with the same customer contacts. Customers do not need to take action because of the announcement. Lumentum also says its product roadmaps and delivery schedules remain on track. A separate supplier communication preserves current agreements, purchase orders, payment processes and points of contact. That leaves current procurement attached to existing suppliers through their established ordering systems.
Claim check
- Company claim Closing is expected in the first half of 2028, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals and other conditions. The acquisition has not completed. [1]
- Company claim Keeping customer roadmaps and delivery schedules on track is Lumentum’s stated commitment, not an independently verified delivery guarantee. [4]
